Industrial Abyss is a huge production company that heads music, movie and TV show projects everywhere. They’re big into entertainment and have a dozen or so mini-companies working under them, heading their next big project, fueling their next big idea.
This is Industrial Abyss’s latest brain wave. Part contest, part reality TV, part music tour, this is the Insane Theory Music Project. Twelve unsigned bands were selected by Industrial Abyss (or a subset thereof) to participate in an epic, six month tour (broken up into two and a half month sprints with a month long ‘break’ in between), spanning the country. These bands will be putting on two-night shows (six bands each night) and the breaks in between won’t be nearly enough. They’ll be living with each other and the other bands constantly. Sure everything provided by Industrial Abyss is next to luxury (like the buses and any set up they could want for their shows) but that might not even be enough to take the edge off.
Oh yeah… see there’s a catch. Next to everything is being video taped. The performances are certainly being taped (from several angles) along with a lot of the after-party, pre-party and back stage stuff. Basically whenever a camera guy can find his way in, something will be taped. This project is part reality TV after all, and there is a full TV crew for the occasion. They put out nightly shows (quickly cut together, nothing fancy) on the internet and after-noon shows daily on the television (on a one-day delay)
See it’s a contest. These twelve bands are competing (and there will be contests… and they won’t be fun). And the world wide audience watching them is judging. Everyone who comes to see their shows (everyone who buys a ticket) is encouraged each night to fill out a very simple form, submittable via text, e-mail, or paper. Just rate the bands they saw in the order of appeal. The best to the worst. The fans have all the power here.
It’s about having a balance between audience appeal and staying true to the music. Oh and of course something is at stake, what would be the point if there wasn’t something at stake here?
It’s a record deal of course, a recording contract. It’s a promise to get the winning band (the one who gets the most audience votes by the end of the tour) off their feet and into the spotlight for real. It’s quite literally the chance of a life time, the means and ability to record and market themselves to the world. Who wouldn’t want that?
If you want the pass code for your application, read the rules and then highlight the bottom of the post.
Oh… by the way… and this is especially important for those bands (and there are a few) who have never recorded anything professionally… see… there is recording going on during this tour as well. Each band is required to create (all original, not pre-tour stuff) and record (with the help of Industrial Abyss and their equipment of course) a complete album between 70 and 80 minutes in length. Pieces will be aired on the afternoon television shows every couple days and the albums in their entirety will be played at the end of the show, before the final votes are cast.
And that’s it. Even though it sounds simple, it’s not going to be. There may be a band or two that doesn’t make it the full 6 months. It’s going to be grueling, and harsh. But it is the opportunity of a lifetime and maybe for some of these bands, it’s worth it.
